Axolotls in Minecraft are amphibious creatures that you can breed—being amphibious means they can survive in water and on dry land. They can only survive out of water for five minutes, though.

They are new to the game, having been added in the Minecraft Caves & Cliffs update, and their home biomes are Lush Caves.

If you’re interested in finding fun new animals to interact with, then the axolotls might be the coolest new addition in this update.

They’re cute animals that are pretty friendly once you know what to do.

How to Find Axolotls in Minecraft

Finding axolotls in Minecraft won’t be tough when you know where to look. So what’s the best approach how to finding Axolotls in Minecraft?

The best way to find axolotls in Minecraft is to look below Y level 63 (i.e., just below sea level) and in the Lush Caves biomes. Axolotls spawn in darkness (i.e., when the visibility is 0) within five blocks of a stone block (fx cobblestone). There must also be solid blocks above their spawn location, so an underground lake is a great place to start looking for Axolotls.

Below I’ll go into more detail on how to catch them, transport them, breed them, and use them as your underwater bodyguard army.

So let’s dive in – literally!

How to Tame Axolotls in Minecraft

You don’t need to tame axolotls in Minecraft. They aren’t hostile, to begin with – at least not hostile to you… but more about that later.

This means that you’ll be able to safely encounter them in the wild without having to be concerned.

That said, dangling a bucket full of tropical fish (see the section about breeding below) in front of their noses will surely make you many Axolotl friends fast!

How to catch and breed Axolotls in Minecraft

Catching and breeding axolotls shouldn’t be overly difficult, as these cute creatures aren’t hostile toward players.

If you want to breed Axolotls, I recommend you catch some first and then build a small breeding pond for them. Remember, it has to be made of stone, and you should close it off, so it’s in the dark.

Axolotls are private creatures that don’t like to be disturbed when doing their ‘magic thing.’ Who can blame them?

However, scooping them up using buckets can be tricky, as they like to move around a lot.

If you find some in the wild, I recommend you build a small one-block enclosure filled with water and lure one in with a bucket of tropical fish.

When the axolotl is within the water enclosure, it’s easier to scoop it up.

Then grab some axolotls in your bucket and carry them to your home pond or lake. This is the only reliable way to relocate axolotls fx if you want to transport them to the nearest village.

You can technically place a lead on an axolotl, but it will die if it remains out of water for longer than five minutes.

Thus, walking an axolotl with a lead to your home pond might not be a practical choice. Just use the bucket to transport it since that will be easier.

Once you have the axolotls in the pond, you can start breeding them. Doing so requires you to feed them.

So what do axolotls eat in Minecraft?

As mentioned earlier, axolotls in Minecraft eat tropical fish, which is a key component of breeding them.

In other words, you’ll need to feed your axolotls with tropical fish from a bucket of water to breed the axolotls in Minecraft.

However, you cannot breed tropical fish in Minecraft, but you can spawn fish using a spawn egg or wait for them to spawn naturally.

When you’ve scooped up some tropical fish in buckets filled with water, it’s time to get the adult axolotls in the mood for love. You do this by feeding the tropical fish to your axolotls.

You need to have two adult axolotls, and you’ll have to feed them both tropical fish.

If all goes as planned, you should see two red hearts appear above their heads. This signals that they’re entering romance mode.

You’ll then see that a baby axolotl will appear. There’s a 50% chance that the baby axolotl will be the same color as one of its parents.

Which color the baby will be is determined by random chance. After 20 minutes, the baby will reach maturity, and you can keep repeating the process to make more and more axolotls.

Minecraft Axolotl Colors

As mentioned above, axolotls can inherit the colors of their parents. There are many different colors of axolotls in the game.

You can find pink, brown, gold, and cyan axolotls. The rarest axolotl Minecraft color is blue. You can get a blue axolotl in Minecraft by being patient. Very patient! I haven’t seen one yet, and I’ve seen many axolotls.

You might encounter one in the wild, but it’s said to have a 0.083% spawn rate. This means you’ll be very lucky if you happen upon a blue axolotl in the wild.

If you ever see one, scoop it up in your bucket and count yourself lucky. You can use it to increase the chances of breeding more blue axolotls.

It’ll be worth it if you like breeding animals and having rare variants.

Create an Axolotl army to help you out

While Axolotls are cute and cuddly, they can be ferocious against enemies – especially in numbers.

They are hostile to evil sea creatures such as drowners. But they’re friendly to other friendly passive mobs, such as dolphins.

Even a single or a couple of axolotls will help you, but if they take too much damage, they’ll probably start to play dead.

The good thing is that playing dead will help your axolotl friend survive as it will recover its health over time.

If you’ve created a small army of axolotls, they can help you out against sea monsters and will attack in numbers like piranhas.

In Closing

This handy guide should make it easier to understand axolotls and what you can do with them. These creatures are very interesting; some say they’re among the cutest creatures in the game.

Minecraft axolotl plush toys are even becoming popular now. You should be able to track down several of these creatures in the game and start breeding them whenever you’re ready.

It might be fun to challenge yourself to get all the different colors of axolotls. Once you’ve collected them all, you’ll be able to stand back and admire your handiwork.

Breeding the axolotls isn’t tough, but it can be fun. It’ll ensure that the pond or lake on your Minecraft property will be livelier than ever.

Axolotls in Minecraft FAQ:

Here are the answers to some other common questions about axolotls in Minecraft.

How do you spawn axolotls in Minecraft in creative mode using command?

If you don’t want to wait for axolotls to spawn naturally where the sun doesn’t shine, you can also use Minecraft’s chat command to spawn axolotls. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Press ‘T’ to open the chat
  2. Type /spawn minecraft:axolotl
  3. Press enter

This will spawn a single axolotl.

If you want more, you can spawn more axolotls by pressing T again, then the Up-arrow on your keyboard, and then entering. That way, you don’t have to repeat the command for each type.
