By far one of the coolest enchantments in Minecraft, Frostwalker is incredibly useful but also difficult to get. In fact, it’s one of the rare enchantments Minecraft players struggle to get.
Once you get it, though, you will wonder how you ever managed to live your life in Minecraft without this wonderful enchantment.
The Frost Walker enchantment is applied to boots and temporarily freezes any water body you walk into.
It’s available in two levels, with the Frost Walker II enchantment being the highest. I’ll get into this in more detail below.
So, how do you get it, and how does it work? Keep reading to find out!

How to get the Frostwalker Enchantment
The Frostwalker enchantment is known as a treasure enchantment, meaning it can not be acquired through the enchantment table.
Without an enchanting table, instead, you have to find this enchantment through other means.
Here are the ways to get the Frost Walker enchantment book in Survival as well as Creative mode:
- Treasure chests (doing a chest loot in a jungle, temple, or stronghold biome)
- Defeating raids.
Of those, trading with librarian villagers (of any level) is the easiest and most surefire way to get your hands on a Frostwalker book.

How to apply the Frost Walker enchantment to your boots
After you have found a Frost Walker book, you will need to use an Anvil to place the enchantment on the boots, like so…
Tadaa… your own pair of Frost Walker boots.
Frost Walker is incompatible with Depth Strider
Remember, you can only have Depth Strider or Frostwalker on a pair of boots.
You can not have both enchantments on the same pair of enchanted boots.
How to use Frost Walker enchantment
Once the Frostwalker enchantment has been placed on your boots, you need to put the boots on.
Then you activate the frost walker effect by simply walking into, or should I say, onto the surface of the water.
That is right!
With the Frostwalker enchantment, any still water blocks underneath your feet and for a certain radius will turn to ice.
The circle radius of the effect is determined by the level of the particular enchantment you use. And the Frost Walker enchantment has a maximum level of two.
- Frostwalker I creates a radius of ice three blocks around you.
- Frostwalker II creates four ice blocks around you.
And, unlike the Minecraft Ice Bomb, the frosting effect will stay with you as long as your enchanted boots are on.

Limits to the Frostwalker enchantment
Keep moving, though. Continuous motion is important because if a player stops moving, the ice will melt, and you will be stuck swimming until you reach land.
This enchantment also protects you from damage when you walk on magma blocks and campfires.
This isn’t a lava walker enchantment, though; it will not work on lava! So do not attempt walking on lava with these boots. You will still take damage just like normal.
The Frostwalker enchantment is by far one of the most useful enchantments in Minecraft. It allows you to traverse any body of water quickly, making you feel like a god.
