Released in 2022, Elden Ring took gamers by storm and has quickly become one of the top games this year.

Elden Ring is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, and Windows PC.

While console players are used to the fps of a game being locked to preserve the best graphics settings possible on the hardware, PC games are a different story.

And PC gamers are a different breed.

So like every other video game, PC players want to know how to show their FPS. This is needed if you’ve used an FPS boost mod to remove the frame rate limit (see FAQ below).

Unfortunately, Elden Ring’s in-game FPS counter does not show FPS beyond 60. So if you’ve used a mod to unlock the fps cap, you can’t see what fps you’re gaming at and check for any performance issues.

Luckily, there are several ways to get around if you know how.

There are three ways of showing your FPS in Elden Ring: NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience, Steam, or some third-party software. To learn how to use these methods, keep reading below!

Using GeForce Experience – Requires NVIDIA GPU

The first method, NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience, is only available for gamers with NVIDIA cards. If you are using Intel or AMD, please check out the following methods later in the article. If you are an NVIDIA card user, follow the steps below to show your Elden Ring FPS beyond 60.

  1. Open GeForce Experience on your PC.
  2. Navigate to your profile in the top-right corner.
  3. Find “Account” and click it.
  4. Select “General” from the menu.
  5. Go to “Overlay In-Game” and press “Settings.”
  6. From there, go to hud layout.”
  7. Click “Performance, FPS, and Position.”
  8. Select where you want the FPS counter to appear.
  9. Now you can see your FPS all the time!

If you’re new to GeForce Experience and the Nvidia Control Panel, see more details in the FAQ at the end of this article.

Using Steam

Alternatively, if you do not have an NVIDIA card or find all those steps above far too complicated, you can use Steam to show your in-game FPS. It is a straightforward process that only requires a few steps:

  1. Open Steam on your computer.
  2. In the top-left corner, click “Steam.”
  3. From the drop-down menu, select “Settings.”
  4. In “Settings,” locate “In-game,” which should be the third option.
  5. Click that, which will open a menu on the right-hand side of your screen.
  6. Where it says “In-game FPS Counter,” you can select where you want it to appear on your screen.
  7. Now you can see your FPS all the time!

Third-Party Software

If you do not want to use Steam to show the in-game FPS or do not have an NVIDIA card, the final method is to use different third-party software.

There are several different third-party software available. I recommend Razor’s built-in software with their devices and the MSI Afterburner FPS Counter

Razor has software for most of its devices, at the very least its mice, which allows for numerous functions, including an FPS counter. However, the main problem with using Razer’s FPS counter is it can occasionally interfere with the GPU and cause games to crash, especially if you ALT + TAB out of it.

The MSI Afterburner FPS counter is much better regarding third-party software. It is free, works with all graphics cards, and does not cause a game to crash after ALT + TAB. If you have any issues with it, please refer to the software’s technical guides on the website.

Conclusion

Because the console versions and the PC version of Elden Ring are fps hard locked as default, you won’t experience the best in terms of image quality this game has to offer. That is unless you do a little bit of tweaking.

The above guide is useful for PC gamers who have modded the game settings to remove the fps cap (see mods in the FAQ below). Showing your FPS in Elden Ring is a great way to see how well your computer’s hardware handles the game and whether you’ve gone too far with those maxed-out settings.

Suppose your hardware is having trouble handling the high-quality graphics in Elden Ring. In that case, you might want to give up on that higher resolution, dial back on that ambient occlusion, or tweak some of the other processor-hungry graphics settings.

If you have Nvidia Experience, the app can set the best Elden Ring settings. This is especially useful for gamers who experience lagging in those hectic boss fights.

FAQ

Does Elden Ring Cap Your FPS?

Yes, the game does have a framerate cap of 60, which is what the counter stops at in-game. While it is a major technical shortcoming, the game has still done very well and remains popular.

Is There a Way to Unlock FPS in Elden Ring?

You can use an Elden Ring FPS unlocker to get around the FPS cap. There are two available that I’d recommend trying out.

The first is this one from Github, which removes the FPS cap and lets you tweak other settings. Fx, you can change the field-of-view (FOV), change the game speed, add widescreen support, and much more.

The second is this one from Nexus mods, a simple mod for removing the FPS cap in Elden Ring. It lets you set a higher fps limit; the default is 300 FPS.

What if My FPS is Still Not Showing Up?

If you have used all three methods above, and your FPS is still not showing up on your computer, you may need to either restart your computer or, in rare cases, even reinstall Elden Ring. Normally, at least one of the above methods will show your FPS; if not, you may need to check online for guides depending on your computer and graphics card.

What is Nvidea GeForce Experience?

If you’re unfamiliar, to open GeForce Experience, you can right-click on the Nvidia settings icon in the bottom-right corner of the Windows taskbar. From here, choose Nvidia GeForce Experience and not the Nvidia Control Panel.

The Nvidia control panel is for tweaking your monitor settings to optimize the overall visual quality of your monitor. Here you can tweak settings like screen resolution, refresh rate, color settings, set up multiple screens, and more.

In contrast, GeForce Experience relates to Nvidia Graphics’ performance in-game. Fx, you can automatically optimize the graphic settings. The software compares your system to thousands of others. It automatically sets things like texture quality, shader quality, shadow quality, reflection quality, volumetric quality, depth of field, and more, for the best performance.

From GeForce Experience, you can also do live streaming and screen recording from the in-game overlay, download and install the latest version of game-ready drivers, and more.
