League of Legends Name Checker (How To Find The Perfect LoL Name)

One of the best and arguably most important parts of any video game is choosing the game name you will be known by. Should it be an epic fear-inducing or funny name, or perhaps it should have a deeper meaning to you and your in-game friends?

Maybe you’re a new player trying to come up with a cool League of Legends summoners name but find that all the unique usernames are already taken. Perhaps you no longer play Mordekeiser, so Mordekeiser76 no longer makes sense, and you need a new name.

Whatever the reason, you have decided to change your summoner name to strike fear in your opponents once more. And nothing sucks more than spending the time coming up with the perfect League of Legends summoner name, only for it to be already taken.

To help you avoid that, I have created this helpful article on how to check different usernames’ availability before trying them in the game.

But first, you need to know that changing League of Legends summoner names isn’t free.

How Much Does it Cost to change the League of Legends Name?

Sadly, changing a particular username to a new dream username in LoL is not cheap.

It will cost you either 1300 RP (Riot Points) or 13,900 BE (Blue Essence). Riot points can only be purchased with real cash, and blue essence can take a long time to farm. Especially if you do not play a dozen games daily.

Some Tips On League of Legends Names

Before we tell you how to check if a name is taken in League of Legends, here are some tips to help you choose a good name.

  • Length: When choosing a League of Legends username, your name has to be between 3 – 16 characters in length. So, that super cool name you wanted, DestroyerofWorlds, is not an option, sadly.
  • Special Characters: While putting special characters into your username can be tempting, try to avoid it. It makes a username look unattractive and can cause issues with username checker engines.
  • Inappropriate Names: Sometimes, you just want to have a laugh and make a funny username that uses some inappropriate words. Don’t, because the Riot team will either change your name for you or your account could get suspended.
  • Riot: It should go without saying, the word Riot can not be used in your username when coming up with it. After all, the company doesn’t want people running around with usernames that could reflect badly on them.

Ultimately, choose a name that means something to you that you will be proud to fight under until the end. But if you have trouble coming up with a name on your own, we have included some name generators below to help you create a username.

How to Check If a Name is Already Taken

I’ll show you two ways to check if a name is already taken in League of Legends. Both are incredibly easy to use, and either one will give you detailed information about available summoner names.

Remember that usernames have a 30-month non-availability period before they become available again.

Method #1: Use the LoL Client’s Built-in Name Checker

The first way to check a username’s availability is with the League of Legends summoner name checker. You can test any username you want, and it will tell you whether or not the username is available for use.

  1. Open your League of Legends client and login to your League of Legends account;
  2. Navigate to the Store menu;
  3. On the Store page, click the profile button in the top right corner;
  4. Click on the Summoner Name Change item;
  5. A menu will pop up, allowing you to test different usernames.

The best part about using this method is if you find a username you like, you can change it immediately if you have the money. Just remember, choose wisely when making your username. You want a unique username but one that you won’t have to change again in a few months.

Method #2: Check The Username Availability On LolNames.gg

The second method for checking a username’s availability is using name checker websites, such as LolNames.gg. It is a very simple site and gives you all the necessary details about a username.

  1. Navigate to LolNames.gg;
  2. Type your potential summoner name into the textbox;
  3. Hit Search and wait a few seconds;
  4. A pop-up box will tell you if the username is available;
  5. If the username is not available, it will tell you when it will be.
